At Avioné, we amplify artists who use their creative skills to tell powerful stories. This month, we sat down with Micah Andrew, a freelance photographer and filmmaker based in North Carolina, whose passion for motorsports and visual storytelling has shaped a distinctive, vintage-inspired style.
Micah’s work is rooted in memory, movement, and meaning—capturing moments that feel alive long after the shutter clicks.
From Home Videos to Motorsports Culture
Micah’s creative journey began as a child, filming everyday life with a VHS-style camcorder. For him, video was a way to preserve memories.
In 2020, while attending a car meet, he found himself bored and began filming on his phone. By March 2022, he purchased his first camera and started documenting the unique energy of motorsport culture. A representative at one of the meetings encouraged him to sell his work, transforming his passion into a profession.
“I wanted to show people the cool things others were doing—and give them memories they could keep forever.”
A Defining Creative Shift
Micah credits 336 Drift Meets, one of the largest motorsport events in North Carolina, as a major influence. Buying his first camera required sacrifice and risk, but it marked a turning point.
His career quickly expanded—shooting NASCAR events and even having the opportunity to showcase his work to Wiz Khalifa. That moment changed his perspective.
“Celebrities are normal people too. The camera opens doors you never expect.”
Although motorsports is his main niche, Micah values versatility. He describes photography as “controlled chaos”—capturing people at their most powerful and authentic.
Creative Style & Visual Identity
Micah’s photography is inspired by vintage film aesthetics, designed to make every subject feel important. While smartphones are powerful, he believes in pushing beyond “basic” visuals to create something unforgettable.
Where He Feels Most Alive
His creative home is the racetrack—where speed, smoke, and emotion collide. Drifting, in particular, fuels his artistic energy.
“It’s hard to take a boring drift photo. The movement, the risk—it gives the images life.”
Purpose Behind the Lens
Even during challenging seasons, Micah continues to create because his work is rooted in what he genuinely loves. Client engagement and positive response motivate him to grow.
He aims to produce images that bring people joy—even if they never post them.
“I want people to feel beautiful, confident, and seen.”
Lessons from Freelancing
Micah emphasizes that photography is both art and business. Some of his most important lessons include:
-
Always back up files and format SD cards
-
Have insurance and corruption protection
-
Think like a business owner, not just a creator
-
Keep systems simple and goal-focused
-
Let go of perfectionism
Freelancing has taught him adaptability, confidence, and the value of focusing on small details in every shoot.
Growing in the Creative Industry
Micah believes success comes from:
-
Authentic connections
-
Supporting other creatives
-
Starting with any device available
-
Avoiding trend-chasing
-
Staying proud of your unique style
“Connections are key. But they must be real. Enjoy the journey—don’t measure yourself against the internet.”
Advice for Emerging Creatives
Micah’s guidance is grounded in honesty and passion:
-
Don’t chase trends—stand out authentically
-
Focus on the experience, not just the result
-
Be inspiring and personal with clients
-
Ask meaningful questions
-
Don’t be boring—a lively life creates lively art
Some of Micah’s most powerful photos come from failures and crashes—moments others might avoid.
“It’s not fun to fail—but those moments can become your strongest images.”
Looking Ahead
Micah is continuing to grow within the car community while remaining self-aware and positive. He believes in showing both the highs and the lows.
As both a driver and photographer, he’s pushing himself to create more, evolve his craft, and expand his impact—without losing sight of why he started.
